Game Boy (Japonés: ゲームボーイ "Gēmu Bōi") es una serie de videoconsolas portátiles alimentadas con pilas (a excepción del modelo SP y Micro) y comercializadas por Nintendo. Es uno de los sistemas más vendidos hasta la fecha.[1] Comenzó como un modelo de consola un tanto experimental, y en su primer año vendió relativamente poco (la Mega Drive de SEGA, por ejemplo, vendió 2 millones de consolas su primer año en el mercado), alrededor de los 4 millones de unidades en todo el mundo. Sin embargo, con la llegada del fenómeno Tetris y el grandísimo apoyo de los licenciatarios que trabajaban para NES y Super Nintendo (Capcom, Konami, Enix/Quintet, Namco, Culture Brain, Jaleco, Interplay, Ocean, Square...) las ventas se dispararon. Sólo el modelo clásico (Game Boy original) consiguió vender hasta 1998 más de 100 millones de unidades en todo el mundo. Más adelante, la GB Color añadiría en tres años cerca de 30 millones de unidades. La Game Boy Advance terminaría con más de 75 millones. En total, más de 200 millones de sistemas con la marca 'Game Boy' se han vendido desde principios de los 90 hasta mediados de la primera década del nuevo siglo. La otra portátil de Nintendo, la Nintendo DS, ha vendido desde su lanzamiento a finales de 2004 hasta diciembre de 2008 más de 90 millones de unidades, renovando así el éxito del mercado portátil de Nintendo.

La Game Boy se llamaba en su fase prototipo Dot Matrix Game o DMG, nombre que conservó en sus registros de número de modelo desarrollado por la división Intelligent Systems encabezada por Gunpei Yokoi y lanzado al mercado el 21 de abril de 1989 en Japón.

Arquitectura interna

Características del sistema original de 8 bits (DMG-001) (1989):

* CPU: versión modificada del Z80 de 8 bits trabajando a 4.194304 MHz
* RAM: 8kB internos de SRAM
* VRAM: 8kB internos
* Sonido: 4 canales. La GB sólo tiene un altavoz, pero tiene salida para auriculares con los cuales se puede escuchar en stereo.
* Pantalla: LCD reflectiva con una resolución de 160x144 pixeles
* Colores: 4 tonos de gris
* Sprites simultáneos en pantalla: 40 sprites cada uno de 8x8 o 8x16 [seleccionable]
* Comunicaciones: puerto serie
* Usuarios: hasta 2 vía cable link conectado al puerto de serie y un Game Boy con un cartucho de juego por cada usuario; o 4 con el "Four Player Adapter"

Usaba como media ("Gamepaks") en cartuchos basados en tecnología PROM. El juego que la llevó realmente a la cima fue el Tetris.

La mayoría de las consolas de videojuegos se vuelven obsoletas cuando nuevos sistemas son lanzados al mercado. La Game Boy, con sus actualizaciones, es única en vitalidad. En 2004 se cumplió su decimoquinto cumpleaños y en todo este tiempo ha sobrevivido a muchas rivales (la mayoría técnicamente superiores), como por ejemplo, la SEGA Game Gear y la Atari Lynx. Hasta la Game Boy Micro, han conservado compatibilidad con los juegos de las versiones anteriores.
